Ceci n’est pas un polaro\u00efd<\/strong> – Benjamin’s name has been mentioned a lot around here lately, and I’ll give you two reasons to take note. Partly because he photographed one of the features for the new PNPPL magazine, and partly because I’m going to be featuring his book’s preview in this post. Benjamin Edeline lives and works in Paris. Benjamin Edeline<\/strong> calls himself an obsessive observer since childhood. He has always been fascinated by the human body: by its gestures, its movements, the way it is articulated, its power and vulnerability. As a way to investigate the intricacies of movement, of one single moment, the practice of digital Polaroids has become the natural medium for his artistic research called: Ceci n\u2018est pas un polaro\u00efd (This is not a Polaroid). It is also an artistic and chronic practice for him; like the \u201ccadavres exquis\u201d (\u201cexquisite corpse\u201d) exercise of the surrealists, or the regular and daily exercise of playing scales for a musician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The polaroids in the series mix vintage photographs from gay pornographic magazines from the 70\u2018s and 80\u2018s with personal photographs from the urban world that Benjamin Edeline snapshots on a daily basis. Collecting, cutting, mixing his own photography with male nudes and vintage gay porn magazines, with their complex interplay of gaze and self-exposure, nurture his personal interpretation of intimacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time ever, Benjamin Edeline publishes three of his iconic series \u201cCeci n\u2018est pas un polaro\u00efd\u201d in book form: Black Screen, White Socks and Red Lovers. Each series contains 25 independent collages. Gathered, they carry a visual narrative on a theme, or a homoerotic scene chosen and highlighted. These themes or kinks are graphically cut out, suggested and animated by the composition and framing, to leave enough space for the reader\u2019s own fantasies. In the digital era, where the censorship of the eroticized male body is once again a real issue, the choices of cutting here become a diverted response to the new morality enacted by social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These sequences amplify the notion of voyeurism and desire. The visual language is nourished by the memory of the erotic or porno\u0002graphic magazine or photo that was bought and passed under the table. This intimate and secret purchase was subject to time: creases would appear, it would be rolled, the corners would be corrugated, the pages would be torn, stained\u2026 These alterations of the paper are found in Benjamin Edeline\u2018s collages, like punctuations in a text. They are the visual rhythms of these polaroid objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benjamin Edeline<\/strong> se d\u00e9finit comme un observateur obsessionnel depuis l\u2018enfance. Il a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 fascin\u00e9 par le corps humain : par ses gestes, ses mouvements, la mani\u00e8re dont il s\u2018articule, sa puissan\u0002ce et sa vuln\u00e9rabilit\u00e9. La pratique du polaro\u00efd num\u00e9rique s\u2018est impos\u00e9e comme le support naturel de sa recherche artistique, comme un moyen d\u2018explorer les subtilit\u00e9s du mouvement, d\u2018un seul instant : Ceci n\u2018est pas un polaro\u00efd. C\u2018est aussi pour lui une pratique artistique et chronique, comme l\u2018exercice des “cadavres exquis” des surr\u00e9alistes, ou l\u2018exercice r\u00e9gulier et quotidien des gammes pour un musicien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les polaro\u00efds m\u00e9langent des photographies vintage issues de magazines pornographiques gays des ann\u00e9es 70 et 80 avec des photographies personnelles du monde urbain que Benjamin Edeline photographie quotidiennement. Collectionner, d\u00e9couper, m\u00e9langer ses propres photographies avec des nus masculins et des magazines pornographiques gays d\u2018\u00e9poque, avec leur jeu complexe de regard et d\u2018exposition de soi, nourrit son interpr\u00e9tation personnelle de l\u2018intimit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour la premi\u00e8re fois, Benjamin Edeline publie trois de ses s\u00e9ries embl\u00e9matiques “Ceci n\u2018est pas un polaro\u00efd” sous forme de livre : Black Screen, White Socks et Red Lovers. Chaque s\u00e9rie contient 25 collages ind\u00e9pendants. Rassembl\u00e9s, ils portent sur un th\u00e8me ou une sc\u00e8ne homo\u00e9rotique choisie et mise en valeur. Ces th\u00e8mes ou kinks sont graphiquement d\u00e9coup\u00e9s, sugg\u00e9r\u00e9s et anim\u00e9s par la composition et le cadrage, afin de laisser suffisamment d\u2018espace aux fantasmes du lecteur. \u00c0 l\u2018\u00e8re du num\u00e9rique, o\u00f9 la censure du corps masculin \u00e9rotis\u00e9 redevient un vrai sujet, les choix de d\u00e9coupage deviennent ici une r\u00e9ponse d\u00e9tourn\u00e9e \u00e0 la nouvelle morale \u00e9dict\u00e9e par les r\u00e9seaux sociaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ces s\u00e9quences amplifient la notion de voyeurisme et de d\u00e9sir. Le langage visuel se nourrit du souvenir de la revue ou de la photo \u00e9rotique ou pornographique achet\u00e9e et pass\u00e9e sous le manteau. Cet achat intime et secret \u00e9tait soumis au temps : des plis apparaissaient, il \u00e9tait roul\u00e9, les coins \u00e9taient corn\u00e9s, les pages \u00e9taient d\u00e9chir\u00e9es, tach\u00e9es\u2026 Ces alt\u00e9rations du papier se retrouvent dans les collages de Benjamin Edeline, comme des ponctuations dans un texte. Elles sont les rythmes visuels de ces objets polaro\u00efds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
