Even before the digital age, when analog photo labs were filled with strangers, queer people turned to instant film to capture their most intimate moments. Soft Butch compiled a book from his Polaroids, featuring photos taken between 2022 and 2025. Highly recommended!
Andrew (aka Soft Butch) is a queer Polaroid photographer based in Portland, Oregon. His debut book “Polaroids: Volume One” was recently published and below is a small taste of the Polaroids featured in his book. The book is 256 pages with 327 images featuring 60 nude male subjects. The images here are censored or show just a tease to keep you wanting more.
There are only a few faces shown in this book because most of the subjects are not traditional models, many have never posed before, especially fully nude. There is a vulnerability and freedom we can access more easily when our identity is hidden. Suddenly without our face, we are more open with our nude form. How we truly show ourselves with just our bodies is what motivated this entire work. Here are some of the subjects posing with the book itself.
The medium of Polaroids was chosen because of their instant but temperamental nature, as well as their rich queer history. When darkrooms and photo labs were filled with strangers, queer people turned to instant film for their most intimate moments.
