Could we start with some background information about you? Where you grow up, where you based, how did you get interested in photography?
Hi, my name is André Carlos and I’m born and raised in Brasilia, Brazil. When I came out as gay, I needed ways to be myself and to express my desires and feelings. Photography was part of my therapy.
Oi, meu nome é André Carlos e eu nasci e cresci em Brasília, Brasil. Quando eu me assumi gay, precisei buscar maneiras de ser eu mesmo para expressar meus desejos e sentimentos. Fotografia foi parte da minha terapia.
Did you always know photography was your ultimate go-to outlet of expression?
Actually I didnt. I was a dancer before I became a photographer, so dance was my first way to express myself but then I fell in love with photography.
Na verdade não. Eu era bailarino antes de me tornar fotografo, então a dança era minha primeira maneira de me expressar, mas me apaixonei pela fotografia.
What is the best thing to being a photographer?
To access places and people with my art and show how I see part of the world.
Acessar lugares e pessoas com minha arte mostrando como eu vejo parte do mundo.
The portfolio is full of beautiful boys. In your opinion, what makes a boy a good model, apart from his good looks or uniqueness?
In my opinion, the most important thing is when the model trust your vision and bring a good energy to the set.
Na minha opinião, a coisa mais importante é quando o modelo confia na sua visão de arte e traz uma boa energia pro set de trabalho.
Good photos need a little magic or chemistry. Do you have any tricks you use to help the model get in the mood for the shoot?
A lot of the models said that the way that I directed them was really good and that brought some confidence to the set, so I guess this is how I do it. Even when I dont know what to do, I fake it till I make it. and I did.
But I think is important to let them know that the set is a safe space for them and always bring some references so they can see what are u thinking. And have fun!
Muitos modelos disseram que a maneira que eu os direcionei durante os ensaios foi muito boa e isso trouxe para eles uma confiança maior, então acho que é assim que eu faço. Mesmo quando eu não sei o que eu estou fazendo, eu finjo ate conseguir a foto que esta na minha mente, e eu já fiz muito isso.
Mas acho de extrema importância mostrar que a sessão de fotos é um lugar seguro para o modelo e sempre levar referencias para que eles vejam mais ou menos o que você esta pensando. E se divirta!
Water, waterfront, water bodies Recurring themes in your portfolio. Does water have any special meaning for you?
Not really and I’m afraid of the ocean hahaha But I like how our bodies react and move the water and vice-versa. I like the drama.
Na verdade não e eu morro de medo de mar hahah Mas eu gosto de como nossos corpos reagem e movem a água e vice-versa. Eu gosto do drama.
In today’s world, where anyone can take photos with their phone, what do you think is the role/responsibility of a photographer?
I think that everyone can take a photo, but not express a feeling through it. So yeah…
Eu acho que qualquer um pode tirar uma foto, mas nem todos podem trazer um sentimento através dela. Entao assim…
You are the creator of Nudus magazine. How did you come up with the idea of creating a magazine, and what is the magazine about?
Nudus was part of my final project in phography school. I always wanted to be cover of a magazine so why dont create my own?
Nudus is a erotic zine with a lot of male nude, bodies and part of brazilian beauty. This year I’m creating the 13th issue and I’m thinking to do a collab with other project, we’ll see.

How do you maintain your creative edge and stay inspired?
Most of my inspiration comes from my pain or feelings that I don’t want to talk about, so I go out to create something new. I listen to a lot of music and I’m always looking for new references and lights to play with. My instragram “explore” and other social media are full of photographers content.
A maior parte da minha inspiração vem das minhas dores e sentimentos que eu não quero falar sobre, então eu saio e vou criar algo. Eu escuto muita musica e sempre procuro novas referencias e luzes para brincar. Minha pagina de “explorar” no instagram e nas outras redes sociais esta cheia de conteúdo de fotógrafos.
What do you do when you got time for yourself?
I stay with my dog or look how can I spend more Money on things that I actually dont need.
Eu fico com meu cachorro e procuro formas de gastar mais dinheiro em coisas que eu não preciso.
