RICHARD KRANZIN

“Having long and intimate conversations with each model really helps to build trust before the shooting and to start into it more relaxed.” – Interview with German photographer, Richard Kranzin.

Could we start with some background information about you? Where you grow up, where you based, how did you get interested in photography?
I was born in Berlin and grew up there. I still live in my old neighbourhood until today. Seems like I enjoy to stay in my comfort zone. My interest for creating images started as a child with my love for filmmaking. During my senior year in school, I explored photography for the first time and found a new way of creating art and then during my film studies in university I learned more about cameras and analogue film.

You used to be a model yourself, how does this help you in your work with your models?
Yes, shortly after school I started modelling around the world. That was around 2010 until 2012. Damn, I’m old now! It was an amazing era in my life that gave me a view behind-the-scenes of fashion photography. It certainly influenced me and improved my own photography skills and opened doors. Since then, I am also coaching newcomer models and try to help them to relax and let go during my shootings.

Good photos need a little magic or chemistry. Do you have any tricks you use to help the model get in the mood for the shoot?
My biggest trick is talking. Having long and intimate conversations with each model really helps to build trust before the shooting and to start into it more relaxed. I can understand that anybody would get nervous to shoot intimate portraits with someone they never seen before. So, creating a welcoming and cozy atmosphere without pressure is crucial. That’s also why I shoot a lot of sessions in my own home. It’s much warmer and cozier than a big open photo studio.

What makes a guy a good ‘model’ for you?
Someone who really let’s go and understands my vision is great. I want to shoot someone who seems 100% comfortable in his skin in that moment, especially when fully nude. Deep eye contact to the camera is important. And on top of all of that a toned body and a classic beauty face are awesome. In general I like guys, who seem unaware of their beauty. It leaves more room for me to explore.

What is the best thing of being a photographer?
Meeting new people and getting that deep connection with them in a short amount of time. I really love to experience these moments of total focus and companionship. It’s like creating a parallel world.

Who are your biggest artist influences?
I would have to say Bruce Weber and Hebert List, which seems like a standard answer. Also Herb Ritts and Helmut Newton. I just really love classic analogue photography and try to approach it myself as much as financially possible.

What do you think about the analogue technique coming into vogue again these days?
I think it’s great that people try to appreciate the art of making a good photo more. It takes more time, more certainty and craft to shoot analogue. I like mindful photos, not random snapshots.

Which one is your favourite analogue film and why?
It’s a black-and-white film called Ilford XP2 Super. I love that it is so contrasty.

You have previously published several books. Do you plan to collect your pictures in a book in the future?
Maybe yes, but let’s give it another 10 years before I will do a „Best-Of Collection Book “. Until then I have enough material to create new themed books along the way. In fact, my new book, coming this year, is almost finished.

What do you do when you got time for yourself?
Going to the cinema, seeing friends, recently hitting the gym again. But my brain is non-stop working on finding projects to keep myself busy.

What are your plans for 2025?
Well, as I said my new book will be released, more info coming soon. And I am also looking forward to have my first paid directing job this summer. Two quite big new projects. I’m happy about that.
