A new analogue adventure, interview with Serge Le Hidalgo, Spanish photographer.
Could we start with some background information about you? Where you grow up, where you based, how did you get interested in arts?
I was born in Salamanca, a beautiful city in Spain. I did live in many places as a child because of my family (Salamanca, Leon, Gijon, Madrid and Barcelona) and also as an adult (Paris, London, MĂ©xico city, New York, Genova) but I’m now living in Marseille, France.
Since I was a little boy I was always drawing and I was good at it. I was a lonely child and it helped me a lot. After I took lessons of drawing, live model and painting. Then I discovered photogaphy and i made studies in photography and cinema.
If there were difficulties around your start-up, how do you remember what helped you to overcome them and become an artist?
It was thanks to Pierre, a boyfriend I had that encouraged me to keep going with photography.
Your pictures are very natural. How much post-production do you avoid?
I use mainly analogue so I dont use post production often.
Why is it important for you to work with analogue photography?
I prefer analogue photography because I like films and the results of differents films. Also the surprise effect cause its very exciting to discover the results after a week of the shooting. I dont do it often now but its really magic to get to develop your own films and see the images appearing in the dark.
Most of your images are outdoor, what attracted you to the outdoors more than studio photography?
I like nature sports as climbing, cross-country ski and alpinisme that’s why I’m more interest in nature.
What are the characteristics of a good model?
Spontaneity. Some people are comfortable with cameras and some people don’t. I guess that’s where my work stars.
What is your dream location where you would like to take photos?
High in the mountains but its really difficult due to the conditions of high, cold and rush.
Would you travel alone or with someone?
Both, but I did travel a lot alone and I love it.
In photography what do you think it takes to succeed recently?
I don’t really know, but I would say that to keep taking pictures and success will come on its own.
Aside of photography, what is your hobby/passion?
Rock climbing, mountaineering, painting.
What do you see yourself doing 10 years from now?
I start thinking of living in a small village in the mountains.
