A little bit of art, a little bit of dark, a little bit of fun and a big splash of love. Here’s the first extra content related to the new PNPPL magazine. In the first joint interview, we explore the story of of Alfonso del Moral and Juan Papagni Meca. In a really special story, after Juan’s captured, Alfonso turned pictures into self portrait from the series. You can see the end result in magazine 7, 16 pages of drooling (at least on my part).
Alfonso del Moral (ADM) – Juan Papagni Meca (JPM)
How did you meet?
JPM: I discovered Alfonso`s Instagram account via a mutual friend (Aljandro Meitin @curadormag), they were doing a Live Direct interview on Instagram about Alfonso’s next exhibition. I think it was around February 2021. I fell in love immediately with his art, so I contacted him and asked about doing a photo collab. He was curious and interested but was a little timid (I love photographing shy people). So after chatting for a while, we agreed we had to meet, He lives in Valencia and I live in the north of Madrid (La Sierra madrileña). The distance and lockdown situation complicated everything so it was not easy to meet. Finally I got the chance to travel and we met in October 2021 and did a photoshoot in his home/atelier in Valencia.
Descubrí a Alfonso a través de un amigo en común, estaban haciendo una entrevista en un Directo de Instagram sobre la futura Exhibición de Alfonso. Creo que fue alrededor de Febrero 2021. Inmediatamente me enamoré de su arte, así que lo contacté, le pregunté si le interesaría que hiciéramos un trabajo en colaboración, una sesión de fotos. Se mostró interesado y curioso, a la vez que avergonzado (mis preferidos: fotografiar gente tímida). Luego de algunas charlas concluimos en que debíamos juntarnos, él vive en Valencia y yo en la sierra norte madrileña, la distancia y la situación de confinamiento y pandemia no ayudaba mucho, por lo que no fue un encuentro fácil. Finalmente tuve la oportunidad de viajar en Octubre del 2021 e hicimos la sesión fotográfica en su Hogar/estudio en Valencia.
What was the first impression of each other?
JPM: I’m very perceptive, so I had already discovered a bit of his personality by his art, Instagram images and selfies. I think nowadays everybody does, we are all very exposed, but because of my experience as an architect and photographer I’m good at reading people with their images. So when we met in person I felt like I already knew him. He seemed shy at the beginning and during the session. It was nice to discover his sensual and perverted side, hence: ´The multiple faces of Alfonso¨.
Soy muy perceptivo, por lo que ya había descubierto un poco de su personalidad a través de su arte y de sus fotos y autorretratos de Instagram, creo que hoy en día todos nos damos cuenta un poco, todos estamos bastante expuestos, pero por mi condición de arquitecto y fotógrafo soy bueno leyendo a las personas a través de sus imágenes, así que cuando nos encontramos en persona fue como si ya lo conociera, parecía tímido al principio y durante la sesión fue lindo descubrir su lado sensual y perverso, ¨”Las muchas caras de Alfonso”.
ADM: At the beginning I was a bit serious because I had never done that before, but I think we were very natural and sincere, and Juan is very respectful. That makes things easy. He gave me some freedom to propose ideas, but he also had his own ideas.
Al principio yo estaba un poco serio porque nunca había hecho eso antes, pero creo que ambos fuimos muy naturales y sinceros, y Juan es muy respetuoso. Eso hace todo fácil. Él me dio cierta libertad para proponer ideas, pero también él tenía las suyas.
What was the most difficult thing during the shooting?
JPM: Actually, there were no difficulties. I really enjoyed the whole process. Alfonso was worried because he is not a professional model, and that’s what I liked most, the real challenge of portraying, discovering the person, following him in his daily habits and in his intimacies.
En realidad no creo que haya habido algo difícil. Disfruté mucho de todo el proceso. Alfonso estaba preocupado porque no es un modelo profesional, y eso es lo que más me gusta a mi, el verdadero desafío de retratar, descubrir a la persona, seguirlo en sus hábitos cotidianos y en su intimidad.
ADM: I found posing hard, as I’m not a professional model, so maybe Juan faced the biggest difficulty trying to make me pose naturally. And also finding the moment to meet, since Juan lives in Madrid and I live in Valencia, but finally we managed.
Se me hizo difícil posar, ya que no soy modelo profesional, así que probablemente Juan tuviera que enfrentarse a la mayor dificultad intentando que posara de forma natural. Y también fue difícil encontrar el momento para coincidir, puesto que Juan vive en Madrid y yo en Valencia, pero al final lo conseguimos.
What was the most funny thing during the shooting?
JPM: I think we both agree about the funniest thing: there was a moment when Alfonso was wearing pajamas and he had an erection. Things got messy and wet. We both began to laugh. It was funny and really sexy at the same time . By the way, thank you to @silviosierra for the pajamas that helped heat up the photoshoot.
Creo que ambos coincidimos en qué fue lo más gracioso: hubo un momento en el que Alfonso estaba usando un pijama y tuvo una erección y se mojó. Empezamos a reírnos, fue muy gracioso y sensual a la vez (espero que Ben elija una de esas imágenes). Por cierto, gracias @silviosierra por el pijama que produjo la situación caliente.
ADM: There’s something very intimate in this kind of situations, and once we got the complicity, I got a boner and I started staining all the underwear he had brought for the shooting. We laughed about it.
Hay algo muy íntimo en este tipo de situaciones, y cuando encontramos la complicidad, tuve una erección y empecé a mancharle toda la ropa interior que había traído para el shooting. Nos reímos de eso.
Alfonso, how does it feel to paint yourself so many times? / Can you detach yourself and just look at your work as a painting?
ADM: Painting oneself is always a good way to self knowledge and to self perception. In any case, I’ve ended up a bit fed up with me, haha. I prefer painting other people, especially in this area. Fortunately, I still have many reference pics to paint.
When working, I always have to detach myself from what I’m painting. I have to look at the world in a different way that the way we’re used to. I don’t see a face, an arm or an eye. I see a contrast, an acute angle, a slight difference of tone value… That’s the difficulty of figurative painting, trying to avoid our preconceived ideas of what we’re looking at in order not to paint our idea, for instance, of a mouth, but the actual mouth that is in front of us. Anyway, painting myself is even easier because I know the traits of my face or my body well.
Juan, what you do when you are not taking photos?
JPM: If I’m not taking pictures, I’m probably developing or retouching them. Also, I have another business, I run my own Bar… so I have a very busy life. In my free time I try to take care of myself, do some exercise and watch movies (which also inspires me a lot in photography).
Si no estoy tomando fotos, es muy probable que las esté revelando o retocando. Además tengo otra empresa, soy propietario de un bar… por lo que tengo una vida muy ocupada. En mi tiempo libre me dedico al cuidado personal, hago ejercicios y miro Cine (que además me inspira mucho en la fotografía).
Alfonso, what you do when you’re not modelling/paint?
ADM: Either solving freelance problems (answering emails, sending invoices, shipping paintings, etc.), which is the boring thing about being an artist; or dancing tango, which is my not-so-secret passion. I’ve been dancing for a decade now and I’m into the queer tango circuits. It’s a different way to create a sense of queer community and to propose from the bodies a more democratic culture, naturalizing non hegemonic desires, pleasures, identities and sexualities; the same way as I try to do with Just Some Fantasies from the painting.
Puedo estar solucionando problemas de autónomo (contestando emails, enviando facturas o cuadros, etc,), que es la parte aburrida de ser artista; o puedo estar bailando tango, que es mi pasión no tan secreta. Llevo bailando desde hace una década ya y estoy metido en los circuitos de tango queer. Es una forma diferente de crear un sentimiento de comunidad y de proponer una cultura más democrática desde los cuerpos, naturalizando deseos, placeres, identidades y sexualidades no hegemónicas; igual que intento hacer con Just Some Fantasies desde la pintura.
What makes you happy?
JPM: Sharing time with the people I love, dancing, traveling and working.
Compartir el tiempo con la gente que amo, bailar, viajar y trabajar.
ADM: Developing an interesting project, sharing it with other people and being satisfied with my work. Of course, dancing makes me happy, but I also love sharing time with my beloved ones. The light and the sun of Valencia make me happy too. Oh! And I won´t forget eating.
Desarrollar un proyecto interesante, compartirlo con otras personas y estar satisfecho con mi trabajo. Por supuesto, bailar me hace feliz, pero también me encanta pasar tiempo con mis seres queridos. La luz y el sol de Valencia me hacen feliz también. ¡Oh! Y no me quiero olvidar de comer.
What turns you on?
JPM: It depends on the day and the situation. Sometimes what turns me on it is a witty personality and other times it could be a big hairy ass… In general I’m a very grateful, kind and easy-going person so it is easy to turn me on.
Depende del día y la situación, a veces lo que me calienta es una personalidad inteligente y otras es un gran culo peludo… en general soy una persona agradecida y generosa, por lo que es muy fácil calentarme.
ADM: What turns me on has changed throughout my life. It has depended many times on the identity I was assuming. Desire is a funny thing, it is mediated by all kind of cultural constructions. I think the more one deconstructs themselves, the wider range of desires they’re capable of experiencing. Beyond the typical gay hegemonic desires, many situations can turn me on: a public place, a locker room, a face or a body I find beautiful, an interesting personality, some kind of smell, or clothes, watching a boner, a threesome with my partner, trying new things… (And piss and cum, may I say that here?).
Lo que me pone cachondo ha cambiado a lo largo de mi vida. Ha dependido muchas veces de la identidad que estaba asumiendo. El deseo es algo extraño, está mediado por todo tipo de constructos culturales. Creo que cuanto más nos deconstruimos, mayor amplitud de deseos podemos experimentar. Más allá de los típicos deseos hegemónicos gays, hay muchas situaciones que me pueden poner cachondo: un sitio público, una cara o un cuerpo que encuentro bello, una personalidad interesante, un tipo de olor, o de ropa, ver una erección, un trío con mi pareja, probar cosas nuevas… (Y el pis y el semen, ¿puedo decir esto aquí?).
