“Bolero music was the source of inspiration for the whole photoshoot. Queer interpretation of famous genre resinated with me in a way that allowed me to be free and experimental. It’s poetry celebrates sexual and gender ambiguity and can be addressed by both genders and to both genders. I wanted to reflect melancholic and prohibited emotions in my artwork which music and poetry of Bolero contains. Boys express their unrestrained romantism and also resistance to excessive love which you will always deny in order to save your dignity because you are put in a normative bubble. Hiking and wrestling together were ways for men to express their emotions and sensitivity, traditionally feminine attributes without compromising their masculinity. Forbidden feelings that boys in many countries can not reveal, things we don’t talk about, passion and sexual desire for unattainable. These are emotions I attempted to capture.” – Butu
