BERLIN – Right in time for Valentine’s Day, indie erotic filmmaker Noel Alejandro is back with Only Friends, which, as the pun in the title suggests, looks into unconventional relationships and the booming platform OnlyFans.
Only Friends is the latest installment in Bedtime Stories, an ongoing series exploring the beauty of intimacy. Noel Alejandro has set the bar high for his erotic films with previous installements such as Asphyxia and Obituary, and Only Friends is no different. A departure from the deeply emotional, psychological focus of BELLO, Only Friends has a lighter plot, but still presents food for thought. Audiences can expect yet another blend of smooth cinematography, charming actors, thought-provoking conversations, and – of course – eroticisim. The film begins with partners Hugo (Pau Alonso) and Pablo (Enol Domenech) inviting their no-strings-attached friend Jesús (Francisco Gabriel) over for the night.
As they catch up over food and drinks, Jesús announces he’s been thinking about making his own OnlyFans account. His revelation makes Hugo and Pablo raise an eyebrow. Why does he want to make his own porn? What about his parents? How much would he charge? A discussion unfolds in which they unravel their anxieties around the subject. The three of them toast to Jesús’s new venture when he playfully throws in an open invitation for them to join him in a video. Desire soon takes over and they leave the cameras out for another time.
True to his tradition of incorporating fruitful topics of conversation, this time Noel Alejandro tackles sex work and, in particular, OnlyFans, which seems to be on everybody’s mind lately. The director raises questions around fair pay, the implications of producing self-made erotic content and how it ties in with cultural anxieties of keeping sex private. The discussion is left open-ended and viewers are prompted to make their own conclusions.
