About the project
Due to a variety of reasons such as a wider acceptance of non-normative cultures and with the advent of digital media/dating apps, the role of cruising and bathhouses may be changing. No longer do you have to go to a designated queer space to find these intimate encounters, but now you can facilitate these interactions remotely, and choose to meet anywhere, in theory turning any space into a cruising space.
Historically Cruising required specific geography, and the internet has challenged the significance of such hard boundaries. cruising required movement through the city, appropriating public space, and reinterpreting architectural programs. However Today we can turn any space into a meeting place.
The transit commute is an integral part of the urban experience and is in itself a type of forced intimacy, with proximity and gaze making it an almost voyeuristic endeavor. This hypnotic fluid movement through space speaks to city life, and with these images, the subway system acts as an analogous space for the urban experience, seeking to construct a speculative city and explore urbanism as a vehicle for intimacy and eroticism.
In this analogous space, we can imagine an almost hedonistic society, where subcultures, and aspects of the unofficial city, became the norm, where the underground becomes less hidden.
