NICK DIBBLE

Let’s start this week with an experimental project, called ‘The Moon and its Sons’ – photographed by Nick Dibble. Click here for an other story by Nick.

‘The Moon and its Sons’ is the photographic telling of a love story. Let the rhythm of this love story guide you, reassure you and expose you to queer intimacy through the three chapters of my own voyage to discover my shared light. The photographic series consists of nurturing imagery of the body that exists in parallel with the Earth’s natural environment. As the narrative develops within the body of work so does the light of the moon; conveying deep blues throughout the first chapter, and developing the colour through to warm and exposed tones. Towards the end of the narrative the story starts to revert and the cycle starts again.

The purpose of this series is to preserve and expose queer romance through low-fi digital processing. In a world where gay men are situated to exist online this project provokes our force to exist physically without the need to be hidden. In the 1960s the LGBTQ association suffered extreme discrimination by heteronormative society due to their dream of change and non-conformity.

‘Twilight Lovers’ was the name given to the men and women who craved, but were constrained in their quest for romance at twilight. In view of heteronormative ways of living in the west the association had no choice but to find love at night through the act of cruising when the moon was at its highest point and straight culture was on the ebb. These micro love affairs at twilight offered tenderness, desirability and hope for many people that felt neglected and unworthy of another person’s endearment.

Our moon acts as our natural guide; leading us as she has previously others. The constant cycle of life that she has witnessed blesses us and our journey through our self discovery. The moon is my mother, and I am her son.
