Maxime Michelet is a French photographer who has been documenting the necessity for bodies and souls to claim their space. Throughout the years, intimate portraiture, along with written life stories, have been instrumental in tackling, eye to eye, the intricate shapes of LGBTI identities and expressions of masculinity. Today, his work taps into his southern French roots. Mixing the arts of fashion photography, theatrical stage building and ethnographic documentary, he aims at restoring the core meanings of blood, land and traditions.
The series presented here, Lo refastinhós, occitan for The reluctant one, places 14 male models in interaction with 14 items that can be considered symbols of the French South. The flags, tools, food or beverages photographed here aim at questioning Southern French masculinity, a rather reluctant and stubborn one, as they are introduced to models who are from other parts of France or the world.
