JUAN CASTILLO

I am delighted to present a new fantastic artist on Pineapple, Juan Castillo. Like great artists in general, he has the confidence to draw and use this to create his own world. For an insight into this world, enjoy the interview with him in English and Spanish.

Could we start with some background information about you? Where you grow up, where you based, how did you get interested in arts?

I was born in Mendoza, a mid-west province in Argentina, where I still live. My first encounter with Art was when I was 12, I owe that to my seventh-grade Art teacher who gave me a photocopied version of a book on human figure drawing. Later, I graduated in Plastic Arts from Cuyo National University and received several training scholarships afterwards

¿Podríamos comenzar con algunos antecedentes sobre usted? Dónde creces, dónde te basas, ¿Cómo te interesaste por las artes?

Nací y vivo en Mendoza, una provincia al centro oeste de Argentina. Mi primer encuentro con el arte fue a los 12 años, se lo debo a mi maestra de plástica de 7º grado quien me regaló unas fotocopias de un libro sobre el dibujo de figura humana. Más tarde egresé de la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo como licenciado en artes plásticas y obtuve varias becas de formación.

How did animals come to play such a big part in your art?

As a boy I always loved my dogs, I loved watching documentaries about animals, browsing encyclopedias and watching cartoons about mutant creatures. Nowadays, I love mythology and I feel a natural drive towards surrealism and magical realism. I think all that led me to start working with animals and in a way, they have become an obsession. I started with my dog but now any animal I come across becomes a photograph. I believe the extinction of species we are witnessing these days is a terrible event so I always try to reflect on that in my work, on how destructive humans can be.

¿Cómo llegaron los animales a jugar un papel tan importante en tu arte?

De niño sentía una gran afinidad por mis perros, amaba los documentales sobre animales, las imágenes de las enciclopedias y los dibujos animados sobre seres mutantes. En la actualidad me encanta la mitología y siento una inclinación natural hacia el surrealismo y el realismo mágico. Creo que de algún modo todo eso hizo que comenzara a trabajar con animales y de algún modo se convirtieran en una obsesión. Comencé con mi perro y ahora cualquier animal que tengo en frente se convierte en motivo de fotografías. También me resulta muy terrible el fenómeno de extinción de especies al que asistimos hoy e intento que mi obra reflexione sobre lo destructivos que podemos llegar a ser los humanos.

Is there any personal message what you hope archiving through your images?

My work generally has a high unconscious percentage. I am interested in the spontaneous and intuitive, I want to raise questions and a sense of uncertainty on the viewer. On the other hand, I think the strange, the mixed, the hybrid refers to the possibility of normalizing diversity, the possibility of understanding and incorporating differences and realizing that although we are very different, we are equally important.

¿Hay algún mensaje personal que esperas archivar a través de tus imágenes?

Generalmente mi trabajo tiene un gran porcentaje de inconsciente. Me interesa lo que surge espontáneamente o por intuición, y principalmente pretendo generar preguntas en el espectador y sensación de incertidumbre. Por otro lado la rareza, lo mixto, lo híbrido creo que se refiere a la posibilidad de normalizar la diversidad, de entender e incorporar las diferencias entre seres y entender que somos muy diferentes pero valemos todos igual.

We all have an animal in us. What’s it like in you?

Thinking about which animal each person represents is a very recurrent task in my job. Which animal would this person be if it were an animal? It is a kind of game that I have incorporated in my work. Sometimes I want to represent a specific animal so I Iook for a human match. In my case, I made a self-portrait in which my head is that of a bulldog and another one with a crocodile head, probably representing my moments of great ferocity.

Todos tenemos un animal en nosotros. ¿Como es en ti?

En mi trabajo es muy recurrente la operación de pensar qué animal es tal persona. Si esta persona fuera un animal, cual seía? Es una especie de juego que tengo incorporado. A veces quiero representar algún animal en especial y busco algún humano que le corresponda. En mi caso me hice un retrato con cabeza de perro dogo y otro con cabeza de cocodrilo, digamos que tengo momentos de mayor ferocidad.

On your website you have a series called the Bible. Are you religious?

This work is an artist´s book. I came up with it after finding a burnt bible which I thought could be a great canvas to represent several ideas against the Catholic institution. It starts with several appropriations from different religions and some terrible historical events in which the Catholic church was involved, such as colonialism, World War 2, the de facto government in Argentina, contempt for women and homosexuality, pedophilia, mafias, etc. In Mendoza, my hometown, churches have been fenced up so homeless people can`t sleep there. Actions like this one motivate this type of work in my artistic production. Even though I am not a religious person, I love mythology.

En su sitio web tiene una serie llamada Biblia. ¿Es usted religioso?

Esa obra es un libro de artista. Surgió a partir del encuentro de una biblia quemada, lo pensé como un soporte ideal para plasmar varias ideas en contra de la institución católica. Comienza por varias apropiaciones de diferentes religiones y algunos hechos históricos terribles en los que la iglesia fue cómplice como el genocidio en la colonización, la segunda guerra, el gobierno de facto en argentina, el desprecio por la mujer y la homesexualidad, la pedofilia, la mafia. En Mendoza, mi ciudad, las iglesias fueron cercadas con rejas para que los mendigos no pudieran dormir ahí, ese es el tipo de hecho que motiva este tipo de obra en mi producción. Aunque no soy religioso me encantan los mitos.

What inspires you?

All shapes around nature. The extinction of species. The struggle for gender diversity. Injustice. The rare, exotic and different. Sexuality. My technical-manual drive, my desire to experiment.

¿Qué te inspira?
Las formas de la naturaleza en todas sus variantes. Le idea de la extinción de las especies. La lucha por la diversidad de géneros. La injusticia. La rareza, lo exótico, lo distinto. La sexualidad. Mi pulsión técnico- manual, mi deseo de experimentar.

How Covid-19 effected your plans for this year? What are your future plans?
The first months of the pandemic were actually really good for me, the possibility of dedicating so much time to my work, non-stop, produced a change, a new pace. Later on, the consequences of the lockdown showed up. Nowadays I am physically showing my work in Espacio Terrazas gallery in Mendoza, something which seems a great achievement these days. I have also been selected for a national drawing biennial which is now on hold due to the pandemic. Most of my future projects are connected to the virtual world. I am participating in an online fair called “OTRA Feria”, a four-episode event in 4 cities: Mexico City in April, Santiago-Lima in June, Sao Paulo in September, and Miami in December. Together with Vermmer Gallery in Buenos Aires, I will also be participating in a global platform which sells NFT Art.

¿Cómo afectó Covid-19 sus planes para este año? ¿Cuáles son tus planes futuros?

Los primeros meses de pandemia fueron realmente buenos para mí. La cuarentena provocó que tuviera muchas horas por día para producir y realmente cambió mi concepción valorativa y práctica del tiempo. Pero claramente luego comenzaron a aparecer las consecuencias del encierro. Actualmente estoy exponiendo de forma física en el Espacio Terrazas de Mendoza, algo que parece todo un logro en estos días. También quedé seleccionado en una bienal nacional de dibujo cancelada y en espera para ser inaugurada. Por consecuencia mis proyectos futuros están notoriamente volcados a la virtualidad. Estoy participando de una feria virtual, “OTRA Feria” que cuenta con 4 episodios en 4 ciudades, abril en Ciudad de México, junio Santiago-Lima, septiembre Sao Paulo y diciembre Miami.y con la galería Vermmer de Bs As estaré participando de una plataforma global de venta de arte NFT .

What do you do when you got time for yourself?

I usually meet friends, get some drinks. I like going to the mountains, taking photos, watching movies and reading.

¿Qué haces cuando tienes tiempo para ti?

Ver a mis amigos, salir de copas, o ir a la montaña, tomar fotografías, ver películas y leer.

What is your motto to live by?

Find your passion and go deeper and deeper into it.

¿Cuál es tu lema para vivir?

Encontrar lo que te apasiona y profundizar cada vez más en eso.
