ARTIST STATEMENT
“Hidden Glances” is a series of photographic collages made from vintage gay pornography calendars published from when I was born until I came out in 2000. These images are hand cut, arranged, and then photographed. By eliminating the presence of skin, the muscular silhouette becomes a window that reveals and conceals parts of another month’s beefy figure.
The use of calendars is strategic. For me, they chronicle a long period in my life when others assumed I was straight, or I was told that I was supposed to be a “real man.” Most gay pornography has appropriated and sexualized masculine, heterosexual archetypes. Over time, however, the muscular bodies are rendered vernacular because they are so common among pornography.
The work is a visual representation of my memory of how I desired to look when all I could catch were fleeting glances. I wanted to look at other men but was afraid that my gaze would linger a bit too long and my true self would be exposed. – Michael
