OLIVER SCARLIN

Still life pictures, portraits, nudes and ceramics – Introduce young artist, Oliver Scarlin from Cape Town, South Africa. Cover picture: Brushing Teeth.

“I began my practice painting mostly still-life, as it was a way to explore the formal elements of painting while quietly celebrating my domestic life as a young adult living with my partner. The still-life work incorporates ceramic homeware that I began making in preparation to moving in with my partner. I like to think the ceramics, figures and still-life work all reflect and inform each other. My figure work is an important addition to my practice: an unashamedly queer statement on my output as a whole. I feel my growth into figure work is strongly aligned with – and a part of – learning to love and explore my queerness openly.” – Oliver
