MARC TURLAN

Today, is a great day. Long ago, when I started this website, I dreamed of such photographers like Marc Turlan. Sometimes dream come true. I’ll give the floor to him now, I hope you will enjoy this little interview, which can be read in both French and English.

Could we start with some background information about you? Where you grow up, where you based, how did you get interested in photography?

Je suis né à Paris et j’ai passé mon enfance dans la région parisienne. Mon premier souvenir de photographie fut un livre d’Helmut Newton. J’ai senti inconsciemment qu’il y avait un monde qui pourrait m’intéresser quand « je serai grand »…

I was born in Paris and I spent my childhood in the Paris region. My first memory of photography was a book by Helmut Newton. I subconsciously felt that there was a world that could be of interest to me when “I grow up”.

Did you always know art was your ultimate go-to outlet of expression?

J’ ai toujours pensé que l’art était ma seule issue, ma seule option dans la vie. Du coup je ne me suis pas beaucoup posé de questions et « fais de l’art » depuis toujours.

I always thought that art was my only outcome, my only option in life. Really, I did not ask myself too many questions and have always been “doing art”.

There is always time and learning for someone to find their own style. That you remember back, was something of a turning point from your photos are started to be “Marc Turlan photography “?

J ai appris la photographie comme étudiant mais j ai aussi décidé pendant des années de ne pas faire mes photos et d‘utiliser les photos qui existaient (beaucoup de magazines). J ai noté aussi ces dernières années un net recul des images de nus, or, c’est la photographie de nu qui m intéresse le plus. J ai donc décidé de reprendre un appareil et de faire mes photos et de travailler le nu, l’érotisme, la pornographie… Tout cela est assez récent: je suis un jeune/vieux photographe.

I learned photography as a student, but I also decided for years not to take my own photos and to use photos that already exist (lots of magazines). I have also noticed in recent years a sharp decline in nude images, but it is nude photography that interests me the most. So I decided to take a camera
again and take my photos and work on nudes, eroticism, pornography… All of this is quite recent: I am a young / old photographer.

You not only take photos, but you also make videos and installations. Looks like you prefer to think in complete projects than just in a series of photos. Is that correct?

Ma pratique a été dès le départ les collages, la sculpture, la vidéo. Bien que je fasse beaucoup de portraits photographiques à présent, je ne me considère pas comme photographe (peut être un jour quand je serai très âgé) mais plutôt comme un artiste plasticien. Souvent une photo est pour moi le point de départ d’un travail: une photographie reste encore dans mon esprit un objet de transition.

From the start, my practice has been collages, sculpture, video. Although I do a lot of photographic portraits now, I don’t see myself as a photographer (maybe one day when I’m very old) but rather as a visual artist. Often a photo is for me the starting point of a work: a photograph still remains in my mind an object of transition.

On Instagram, your highlighted stories are ‘Confined Butts’ – what is that project about?

J’ ai la grande chance d’avoir pu me confiner dans l’école des beaux arts de Marseille dans le sud de la France. J’étais seul entouré d’œuvres en devenir de jeunes artistes en devenir et alors absents. C était le printemps et très vite j’ai observé sur Instagram des photos de « fesses » ! Instagram, de
façon absurde et grotesque interdisant les sexes, les tétons… les gens ont trouves une faille: montrer ses fesses… comme une liberté dans un monde qui se fermait globalement. Cette intention m’a enchanté. J ai contacté quelques personnes sur Instagram et mis en place un protocole vidéo en
imprimant les « fesses » que je recevais du monde entier (j avais tellement de photos que j ai décidé d’arrêté le projet a la fin du confinement en France.). J ai nommé ce projet vidéo « Confined Butts »

I am very fortunate to have been able to be on lockdown at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille in the south of France. I was alone surrounded by works in the making by young artists, in the making, and then absent. It was spring and pretty soon I was looking at pictures of “butts” on Instagram! Instagram, in an absurd and grotesque way prohibits genitals, nipples… people found a loophole: to show their butts… like a freedom in a world which was closed globally. This intention delighted me. I contacted a few people on Instagram and set up a video protocol by printing the “butts” that I received from all over the world (I had so many photos that I decided to stop the project at the end of lockdown in France). I named this video project “Confined Butts”.

Paris, like any cosmopolitan city, is a great fusion of different cultures. The varied form of expression also appears in your art. Do you think the diversity of a Paris also affects you in the artistic field?

Ce qui me plait le plus a Paris se sont les galeries d art. Et depuis toujours. Plus jeune j’allais tout voir sans savoir vraiment pourquoi. Aujourd’hui encore, découvrir un artiste fait partie des choses de la vie qui me réjouissent le plus.

What I like the most in Paris are the art galleries. As always. When I was younger I went to see everything without really knowing why. Even today, discovering an artist is one of the things in life that makes me happy the most.

Is there a personal connection between you and what you are hoping to achieve through your images?

Mes portraits sont obsessionnels ils parlent de moi bien sûr. Et de plus en plus : je prépare une série de photos sur les lieux de « cruising » parce que ces lieux me fascinent. Je ne photographie que des hommes nus, pensant ne pas savoir faire d’autres photos. Mais tous ces portraits parlent de moi, de l’érotisme, du désir, de l’obscénité, de l’interdit, de la liberté.

My portraits are obsessions, they tell a lot about me of course. And more and more: I start to prepare a series of photos on the places where “cruising” happens because these places fascinate me. I only photograph men nude, while thinking I don’t know how to take any other photos. But all of these portraits speak to me of eroticism, of desire, of obscenity, of the forbidden, of freedom.

You don’t belong to the current young generation. How easy or difficult is it to keep the rhythm in 2021 as an artist?

Comme artiste je ne pense pas que la difficulté soit d’être jeune ou vieux, la difficulté est de faire son travail, de s’obstiner, de travailler, de se donner les moyens de travailler.

As an artist I don’t think the difficulty is to be young or old, the difficulty is to do your job, to persist, to work, to give yourself the means to work.

What project are you working on now?

Je viens de faire un projet pour une jeune galerie à Toulon (galerie de l’Axolotl). Je travaille sur des éditions pour l association NU2 que nous avons créée avec des amis sur l’ile naturiste du Levant dans le sud de la France. Une série de collages de textes pornographiques de différents auteurs.

I just did a project for a young gallery in Toulon (Axolotl gallery). I am working on editions for the NU2 association that we created with friends on the naturist island of Levant in the south of France. A series of collages of pornographic texts by different authors.
