BRADLEY ATKINSON

“I paint yellow flowers for my mom and geraniums for my aunt, but when I paint for myself it’s this collection of male figures” – and here they are. Presenting artworks by Bradley Atkinson for yout to enjoy.

“Once I got to college I determined my sexuality pretty quickly. I say that now, 3 years out. I’m entertained by the way people close to me see my paintings. I’m not a hyper sexual human. And I never view my paintings as implicitly erotic. Yet part of my fulfillment now is eliciting a reaction. It rides a wave of appreciation, but discomfort and confusion, then a little intrigue. I don’t see the paintings as overtly sexual. I don’t ~feel~ any variance when painting a partial-nude versus a full nude figure. I’m exploring how people respond to my expressions of sexuality… which may have been done before but now it’s my turn. This is a small area of my personality that has grown over time. I’m baffled that certain parts of the human body are deemed ‘inappropriate’ to display to other humans. I get to walk that fine line trying to figure out my answer to the age-old question, “can sex be art?” And then “who gets to appreciate it?” I paint yellow flowers for my mom and geraniums for my aunt, but when I paint for myself it’s this collection of male figures.” – Bradley Atkinson
