I am happy to present Matteo Piacenti, this young talented Italian artist, for the first time but hopefully not the last time on Pineapple.
Imagine life, imagine it a whole roll long, of which the end escapes the eye. Imagine it scanned in spontaneous, contrite, superb, unexpected shots; motionless, suspended shots. Shots of strangers, who are different from you, yet equal to you. There’s someone who did not stop at the imagination, there’s someone who gave himself to creation, to describe and transmit a feeling. Matteo Piacenti is only nineteen and has got a whole life to be transcribed on a pellicle. He chose not to wait, he chose to put passion and energy in the narration of his growth, of the years lived so far, in the company of the lens and of who he has been, writing himself with light, through the faces and bodies of others.“Irrational but conscious” is a story, a route without conclusion or goodbye: it is a start, the promise of a continuation. It is the insecurity of a boy who is still unaware, hidden behind his hands; it is the determined gaze that pierces the support, escaping from the image. It is the softly held cigarette between the fingers of a casual young man, who’s enjoying the freedom of a break, more self-conscious and finally accepting himself.The photos portray different individuals, to unite them there is only the sex: they are all men. Their body is praised by the caress of the lens, by the luminous kisses of the headlights, which outline their profile, in sharp contrast with the dark, monochromatic background. The choice is determined by the desire to emphasize the main subject, naked or wrapped in slight, transparent clothes, so as to enhance the anatomy and the details of the figure. Much of his work is in black and white, necessary for the young photographer. The aim is to communicate to the viewer a simple truth: what you observe is fiction, reality is in color. Yet it is deeper than empirical reality: it is torment, introspection, voice and feeling. By photographing in color, the eye would focus on colors, while Matteo wants to exalt the material, mold the shapes and show the volumes. This desire derives from the passion, born at an early age, for the sculptural three-dimensionality, found only by shooting in two colors and in Caravaggio-style contrasts. His art is characterized by an original experimentalism, a constant search for the perfect framing in its imperfection, which is the shot that knows how to capture the naturalness of every moment. It seeks the essential to valorize the purity of the subject, its dignity. Not by chance, they are often homosexuals, discriminated against for centuries and still today sadly excluded by numerous societies. In the photos, they claim the coveted rights. Their voice is Matteo’s voice, vibrant along the thread that unites the camera to the people, pronouncing their identity, which is his identity. – Sofia Fabbrianesi
Immaginate la vita, immaginatela lunga un intero rullino, la cui fine sfugge all’occhio. Immaginatela scandita in scatti spontanei, contriti, superbi, inattesi; in scatti immobili, sospesi. Scatti di estranei, che sono altro da voi, eppure a voi uguali. C’è chi non si è fermato all’immaginazione, c’è chi si è dato alla creazione, al descrivere e trasmettere un sentimento.Matteo Piacenti ha solo diciannove anni e tutta una vita ancora da trascrivere su pellicola. Ha scelto di non attendere, di porre passione ed energia nel racconto della sua crescita, degli anni vissuti finora, in compagnia dell’obiettivo e di se stesso, scrivendosi con la luce attraverso i volti e i corpi di altri.“Irrazionali ma coscienti” è una storia, un percorso senza conclusione o addii: è un inizio, la promessa di un proseguimento. È l’insicurezza di un ragazzo ancora inconsapevole, nascosto dietro le proprie mani; è lo sguardo deciso che trafigge il supporto, fuoriuscendo dall’immagine. È la sigaretta mollemente tenuta fra le dita di un giovane disinvolto, impegnato a godersi la libertà di una pausa, più conscio di sé e finalmente accettandosi. Le foto ritraggono individui diversi, ad accomunarli c’è solo il sesso: sono tutti uomini. Il loro corpo è elogiato dalla carezza dell’obiettivo, dai baci luminosi dei fari, pronti a delinearne il profilo, in netto contrasto con lo sfondo monocromatico, scuro. La scelta è determinata dal desiderio di enfatizzare il soggetto principale, nudo o avvolto da vesti leggere, trasparenti, in modo da esaltare l’anatomia e i dettagli della figura.Gran parte del suo lavoro è in bianco e nero, necessario per il giovane fotografo. Lo scopo è comunicare allo spettatore una semplice verità: quel che osservi è finzione, la realtà è a colori. Eppure, è più profondo della realtà empirica, nota ai sensi: è tormento, introspezione, voce e sentimento. Fotografando a colori, l’occhio tenderebbe a focalizzarsi sulle tinte, mentre Matteo vuole esaltare la materia, modellare le forme e mostrare i volumi. Tale desiderio deriva dalla passione, nata in tenera età, per la tridimensionalità scultorea, ritrovata solo scattando in bicromia e nei contrasti caravaggeschi.La sua arte si caratterizza per un originale sperimentalismo, una costante ricerca dell’inquadratura perfetta nella sua imperfezione, ossia lo scatto che sappia cogliere la naturalezza di ogni attimo. Ricerca l’essenziale volto a valorizzare la purezza del soggetto, la sua dignità. Non a caso, spesso si tratta di omosessuali, per secoli discriminati e ancora oggi tristemente esclusi da numerose società. Nelle foto, si riappropriano dei diritti agognati. La loro voce è la voce di Matteo, vibrante lungo il filo che unisce la macchina alle persone, pronunciando la loro identità, che è la sua identità. – Sofia Fabbrianesi
