It was a long time ago when we interviewed Gori Mora for PNPPL zine 02, but finally he is back and first time showing his artworks on Pineapple. Give a warm welcome to this great artist.
About Gori Mora
Multi-disciplinary artist from Mallorca, Spain. Currently, he lives and works in Glasgow where he obtained a Master degree in Fine Art Practice at The Glasgow School of Art in 2018.
My current practice focuses on exploring the myriad effects of technology on our social interactions, our self-perception, and our most intrinsic values. I am interested in working around desire, understood as one of the main engines of social communication, accentuated with new technologies – a new way of communicating. From these concepts, I create hypothetical Queer situations in fictional spaces full of symbolism.
To symbolise the concept of virtual space, for example, I very often use oil on perspex. I use oil paint to highlight the contrast between our contemporary technology-based social interactions with traditional means of communication; a reference to classical portraiture’s role in courtship before the advent of photography. The contrast of the subject matter is mirrored in the mediums used, and therefore the aesthetic rendered. Extreme care and planning is necessary when painting on perspex, as the first brushstroke placed on the support will be the first one the viewer sees. In order to carry out this reverse method, I started with the fine details and worked backwards until the final layer of background colour could be brushed on. This unorthodox process creates a situation in which the viewer is confronted with the reverse of the painting. The aesthetic of an exhibition screen is invoked; a world just out of reach that one is at once privy to, yet ever estranged from.
