About Karlo
Born in Mexicio, in 1989. Karlo relocated in Australia in 2011 to pursue a career in architecture and explore his sexuality away from a conservative upbringing and home town. In Melburne – along side his studies and work – a tumultuous path in sexual discovery led to artistic experimentation, from ventures in gay porn to more conventional pursuits, now culminating in collage. His work encompasses a collection of erotic fantasies against often minimal, sometimes stark settings. In doing so, his work highlights the internal conflict between the pursuit of his own exhibitionist sexual interests and a responsibility towards pursuing a conventional career.
In his latest works – the product of renewed interest in self-portraiture and video – Martinez takes a plunge placing himself directly into his scenarios of sexual hedonism and architectural backdrops, fully owning his body and desires.
