For the ancient Greeks love (Eros) had 3 faces:
Anteros: that is, reciprocated love.
The legend tells that one day Aphrodite complained to the Goddess Themes that little Eros did not grow, so the wise Themes replied that Eros would never grow up until he had the love of a brother. Aphrodite joined Ares and generated Anteros and from that moment the two brothers grew up together, but whenever Anteros departed from Eros, the latter returned as a child. This gracious myth teaches that love (Eros) to grow needs to be reciprocated (Anteros).
Himeros: it is the passion of the moment, the present and immediate physical desire that asks to be satisfied.
Pothos: it is the desire towards which we tend, what we dream of.
Pothos, as the face of a loving, nostalgic, unreachable dimension, is that idealized love that is expressed in suffering and in seeking the soul mate. Anteros and Himeros live in the present, while Photos, the nostalgic dimension, lives in the past or in the future.
