Berlin based, but Spanish photographer – visal artist Adri Cuerdo shares his project ‘Objects to live with’. Sleep on or sleep with? Pick your favorite textile sculpture and read about Adri’s inspiration in English and in Spanish too.
“I started this project in a very natural way. I just moved to Berlin and my room was completely empty. I had the opportunity to start again, so I unconsciously started a process of habiting space. “Objects to live with” talks about the relationship between human beings and objects, about the need to occupy a space and make it ours. Most of my inspiration comes from product design and fashion, that’s why I decided to approach the project from textile sculpture.
Each handmade piece is designed to fit and cover different parts of the human body generating different “ephemeral sculptures” that will be recorded in photographs. I conceive it as an open project, I want to continue it and even to make pieces by order. For now I have formalized it as an installation in which the pieces interact with large-format photographs.
During the work process I wonder if it still makes sense to mark the differences between disciplines. Many artists seem annoyed when they are related to design, they deny any kind of functionality in art. Art is just art. Sometimes we forget that artists are also at the service of people and we find it hard to leave our creator’s ego aside.

“Comencé este proyecto de una forma muy natural. Acababa de mudarme a Berlin y mi habitación estaba completamente vacía. Tuve la oportunidad de empezar desde cero, por lo que inconscientemente inicié un proceso de habitar el espacio. Objects to live with habla de la relación del ser humano con los objetos, de la necesidad de ocupar un espacio y hacerlo nuestro. Gran parte de mi inspiración viene del diseño de producto y de la moda, es por ello que decidí abordar el proyecto desde la escultura textil.
Cada pieza hecha a mano, está pensada para acoplarse y cubrir diferentes partes del cuerpo generando diferentes “esculturas efímeras” que serán registradas en fotografías. Lo concibo como un proyecto abierto, no descarto continuarlo e incluso hacer piezas por encargo. Por ahora lo he formalizado en forma de instalación en la que las piezas interactúan con fotografías de gran formato.
Durante el proceso de trabajo me planteo si aun tiene sentido marcar las diferencias entre disciplinas. Muchos artistas parecen molestos cuando se les relaciona con el diseño, reniegan de cualquier tipo de funcionalidad en el arte. El arte por el arte. A veces nos olvidamos de que los artistas también estamos al servicio de las personas y nos cuesta dejar nuestro ego de creador a un lado.
