Marcelo Stockler took himself naturally to the path of visual arts. Based in São Paulo, Marcelo works on different personal and commissioned projects. Studied Interior Design and Photography, although this doesn’t define him. Read our interview with him below.
How you get interested in art?
When I was little, I drew a whale during a class when suddenly I realized that everybody else was behind me waiting for me to draw for them too. It’s one of my oldest and most precious memories. It was the first time I felt really recognized by someone.
You often draw about childhood. Can you tell us a bit about yours?
Childhood is such a magical moment, isn’t it? All that innocence and freedom that gets lost with time. We grow up so fast and in a blink everything got very far away. I had a very happy childhood. I’ve always been a loved child. Everything I can remember is good, except for the fact of me feeling atypical and misunderstood kid. I feel this moment is very special to be forgotten.
The first childhood memory what you remember?
My grandpa putting me above the table and giving me a pack of candies. Maybe that’s why I love candy so much. I love sugar.
What was your dream job when you were a child?
I used to dream about being an astronaut, but only because I used to feel as if I don’t belong in this world – always in search of a bigger explanation for what I’m doing here. But now that I’m an adult, I’m sure I’m here on Earth to draw. And why not draw what I love? Which is love, always escaping from us.
So you are realizing your dreams with your daily job? You never see yourself doing something else?
These are hard times for dreamers. Nobody feels complete. We’re always wanting to do things we think we can’t. But the truth is we can do whatever we want, even when it seems impossible. I never thought I could touch someone with my drawings, for an example. Now, I realize I can. People see and understand me. People become emotional with my art. I want people to remember those times when we were perhaps fuller of life.
I guess for line drawing need very steady hands. What happen if you make a mistake? Can you correct it on chinese somehow?
I’ve always been a perfectionist. My hands are great for lines, and with a melancholic song it just flows. If I make a mistake on a drawing I can correct it before it’s permanent, but it rarely happens.
Is there a collection of mistakes or you throw them out?
There are some old ceramics I use to test new inks. But I don’t mind throwing them out at all! In fact, I love throwing things out and rearranging my studio. This way I have more space for new works. I love empty spaces for working because music completes it and I feel more comfortable.
What is the best thing about photography and what is the best thing about drawing?
I’m an introspective guy, which is why I thank phones with great cameras. I like the discretion for capturing the spontaneous moments of my friends and people I love. Despite that intimacy, I’m very attracted to strangers because I can imagine the best version of them. In drawing, the best thing certainly is expressing my feelings and see them set free.
What or who inspires you as a photographer?
People inspires me. It seems generic, but everyone has a peculiarity. And I can see it.
What is your “goal” as a photographer tp shoot?
My concern is always to do something beautiful. And beauty for me is a moment captured in a subtle and stunning way. These moments happen almost like an accident, which makes me feel surprised and it only proves the power of our subconscious.
What is your next to do for today?
A ceramic for a special friend. But the good news is that I’m also preparing myself to make tattoos. After sometime, I finally realized that it’s an extension of my work. People like what I’m doing and they want it on your skins because they see themselves in my drawings. So, this is a next chapter of my life. Eternalizing memories for other dreamers. I have no words to describe the feeling of seeing someone that want so much those memories. I feel touched. You guys keep me going. Always.
