Outtake of PNPPL zine 01 – Interview with Brazilian artist, Rodrigo Mogiz.
Where are you from?
I am from Belo Horizonte city, capital of the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil.
Could you tell a few words about your background and what made you interested to make art?
I was always interested about art. To express my feelings and ideas through shapes and colors and to tell some stories. I like to create my connections with my own art and with affective issues reflecting my vision of the world. It all starts with some very personal issues around the affection and desire to understand what my essence is. But everthing expands when you find out that other people have similar issues and you get to reach them with your art. Its very pleasant!
You doing embroideries, drawings, paintings and write… Which is yourfavorite art?
I like them all. I have my moments with each one of them. I’ve started with painting and I thought I would become a painter. The embroidery through drawing became my strongest artistic language, but pictorial reasoning is always present. With the embroidery I can mix many language forms, including writing and performance.
Do you prefer to work in big o rin small size?
Whatever. It depends on each work. I usually make small works, but I have worked in big size too. Big works cause more visual impact, but small ones can cause a sense of intimacy. Depends on the the artistic intentions of the moment.
What things inspires you?
Many things inspires me. The work of other artists, literature, books, stories and narratives. Movies. As I said before, I try to tell stories with my work. Photography is also something that inspires me a lot, fashion photographies or sensual essays. I really like photos of the human body, the male nudity. Magazines and pop culture, besides regional and mythological iconographies.
Do you have time to do something else? What else you do?
Always connected with art. Jobs in ONGs, social projects, curatorial projects, workshops of embroidery in contemporary art… But I want to expand to projects in fashion and design. I really enjoy cooking and maybe one day I mightuse gastronomy in my work. Just ideas, who knows.
If your home is on fire, what do you save first?
First my life. Then my artwork if I have the time.
How your ideal man looks like?
Someone who is my partner, my lover and friend. The physical beauty is important in the first moment, and in many other moments too. But after the sexual attraction, it is important the connection of ideas and goals. The ideal man is the one who inpires you.
Name three things what you believe in.
My art. My feelings. Myself.
