AMER MOHAMAD

Interview with Amer Mohamad fashion photographer.

Could we start with some background information about you? How did you get interested in photography?
I am Syrian born and raised and by the end of 2012 I moved to Russia to study and I am a 5th year architecture student , I started my love for photography in syria, but in Russia I got to practice it more, I started taking images of girls who used to live in my dorm “ they were different races which was so interesting and captivating “ then around may 2013 I went to a modelling Agencey showing them “ portfolio “ of what I shot and the declined me and said I should study Russian and leave the camera. It motivated me so much, so I started working on myself.

Tell us a little about you photoshots. How do you work? Do you give exact orders to the models, or you let them to do whatever the like?
I don’t use the images or show a pose to do the same, usually the model move and lead them by saying “chin up, move hands, step back, cross legs, make more abs“ that way I work but I always have a vision of what I need, so I say like we start here and it goes on. So my images or work is happening on set. Nothing planned, that is my style
Or signature if you call it that way .

What features makes a model to be great not just a guy front of the camera?
Character, you know so many models are gorgeous, but without character, it can be just another test shoot. they should be able to show themselves, the models energy is everything , when the model can go over the limit in a shoot process thats diamond worth.

How do you get inspirated?
Culture ,people, friends , publications, galleries, phonebooks , other photographers can say as well, I find it everywhere and living in a country which isn’t your native country, its such a big inspiration.

You do very much fashion photoshots. What is your view of the recent fashion and fashion photography?
Actually, the photographer solves the puzzle, your wrong, the stylist can see the clothes on model but the photographer see’s it as a product or a finish image. So many clothes looks perfect in reality but on photos it can suck, And lot of stylists do ask photographers what they think and I believe that team work is all of them talking and discussing what to do and what not to do . The photographer connects the stylists vision and the makeup/hair work and the model in a photograph. As for photography these day its evolving so fast and the norms of whats fashion and not do change by the place, or culture, to whom hard lights are fashion to whom soft light is, some like only natural light some like studios, so no rules in this actually, I am still learning thou.

How come to collaborate with Instrict.Berlin and how was it?
It was amazing ,im so thankful that they had me among these amazing artists, all the love to Eric and the whole group of instinct Berlin . As for that , I reached out actually on instagram by saying I love the gallery and it went on.

People many times refuse to date with photographers, couse they think we all impressend only the most handsome ones. How is that with you?
My type of male, hmm, I am into redhead and blonds, body image doesn’t really matter to me, my bf would be someone looking like me normal guy, a bit tall, collard eyes are a plus, beardy or a little dirty beard is fine, I mean red head with a smallshaped beard is irresistible ! But still, you cant tell for who you will fall into. Never dated models.

What is your next to do now?
Graduating on June and working on my photography , I am aiming for an exhibition as well , all in time I hope !
