Painter of hugs and master of bright colours, Daniel Torrent. It is my pleasure to share this bilingual interview with you, I hope you get a little lost in this colourful celebration.
Could we start with some background information about you? Can you take us through the timeline on how you became an artist?
When I graduated in Art History at the University of Barcelona I felt that the theoretical training I was receiving should be applied in practice. I had always liked drawing, and the fact that my mother was a sculptor was a bit like having a teacher at home, so instead of studying Fine Arts I decided to study film directing. But I saw that to be a director it was necessary to have two qualities that I lacked: patience and leadership skills. That’s why, after taking the doctorate courses in Fine Arts, I studied illustration, because making illustration books is like shooting mini-movies without anyone else. By that time I had won some painting awards and got a grant to mount my first exhibition. And since then I have been combining my work as an illustrator with painting exhibitions.
Cuando me licencié en Historia del arte en la Universidad de Barcelona sentía que la formación teórica que estaba recibiendo debía de aplicarla en la práctica. Siempre me había gustado dibujar, y el hecho de que mi madre fuera escultora era un poco como tener un profesor en casa, por ese motivo en lugar de optar por estudiar Bellas Artes me puse a estudiar dirección de cine. Pero vi que para ser director hacía falta tener dos cualidades de las que yo carecía: paciencia y dotes de mando. Por eso, tras hacer los cursos de doctorado en Bellas Artes, estudié ilustración pues hacer libros ilustrador es como rodar mini películas sin necesidad de nadie más. Por esa época y había ganado algún premio de pintura y obtuve una beca para montar mi primera exposición. Y desde entonces he estado compaginando mi labor de ilustrador con exposiciones de pintura.
How do you describe your art in a few words/sentences?
I work from emotion, but for an emotion to last it must involve a certain mystery, a certain complexity. I would say that I try to create an anti-manichean art, which at the same time that creates emotion can be perceived in different ways, and with various levels of emotion. Different ways, and with various levels of emotion. My current work tries to reflect intimacy between men, not only sexually and not only between homosexuals, but all those situations in which two men allow themselves to break the unspoken rule that men don’t touch each other. That men don’t touch each other. I talk about sex and romantic love, but also about friendship, contact sports, locker rooms… and I do it with an expressionist language where I try to make the most of anatomical distortion and free interpretation of color.
Yo trabajo desde la emoción, pero para que una emoción dure debe de conllevar cierto misterio, cierta complejidad. Diría que intento crear un arte anti-maniqueo, que a la vez que crea emoción se pueda perccibir de maneras diferentes, y con varios niveles de emoción. Mi trabajo actual trata de reflejar la intimidad entre hombres, no sólo sexualmente y no sólo entre homosexuales, sinó todas esas situaciones en las que dos hombres se permiten romper la regla tácita de que los hombres no se tocan. Hablo de sexo y amor romántico, pero también de amistad, de deportes de contacto, de vestuarios… y lo hago con un lenguaje expresionista donde intento sacar el máximo partido de la distorsión anatómica y de la interpretación libre del color.
It is said that as long as one doubts one’s own art, one is capable of progress, one who is full of oneself is stuck at the same level. What do you think about that?
I totally agree, what is really worthwhile in this profession is to be surprised by the result of a new work, and that brings with it a certain insecurity, not knowing exactly how it will end. That’s why I’ve changed my style and register so much over the years.
Estoy totalmente de acuerdo, lo que de verdad vale la pena de este oficio es que te sorprendas ante el resultado de un nuevo trabajo, y eso conlleva cierta inseguridad, no saber exactamente cómo acabará. Por eso mismo he cambiado tando de estilo y de registro a lo largo de los años.
Your characters and subjects are often erotic. Do you find the ideas for the pictures from your life or some other way?
I have rarely based my erotic works on personal experiences, but rather on something that inspires me, I work mostly with photographs and models, and with whom I somehow feel a certain connection.
Muy pocas veces he basado mis trabajos eróticos en experiencias personales, sinó más bien lo baso en algo que me inspira, trabajo sobretodo con fotografías y modelos, y con los que de alguna forma siento cierta conexión.
Looking through your Instagram, you have a lot of hugs in your pictures. Why is that, what does a hug mean to you?
My art, although it has a sensual component, its purpose is not really to excite. What I want to explain is how two bodies relate, and the affections that are established between two men. And the embrace expresses this very well. Sex is only a part of this, and if we look at it, even the most overtly sexual scenes are an excuse to portray kisses and embraces.
Mi arte, aunque tiene un componente sensual, su finalidad no es realmente la de excitar. Lo que quiero explicar es como dos cuerpos se relacionan, y los afectos que se establecen entre dos hombres. Y el abrazo expresa esto muy bien. El sexo es sólo una parte de esto, y si nos fijamos, incluso las escenas más abiertamente sexuales son una excusa para retratar besos y abrazos.
What do you expect from 2023?
To be able to continue having the good fortune of working in what I love and sharing it with the people I love.
Poder seguir teniendo la suerte de trabajar en lo que me gusta y compartiéndolo con la gente a la que quiero.
Aside from drawing/painting, what’s your favorite art medium? / are you interested in other arts?
I am a writer, I have published several books for children and young people, and I also like music. I play the piano as an amateur and I had been a member of a pop group for which I had composed several songs. Also this summer I would like to try to move this theme from male intimacy to sculpture.
Soy escritor, he publicado varios libros infantiles y juveniles, y también me gusta la música. Toco el piano como aficionado y había sido miembro de un grupo de pop para el que había compuesto varios temas. Además este verano me gustaría tratar de pasar este tema de la intimidad masculina a escultura.
What do you do when you got time for yourself?
I like to travel, watch movies, read, eat, cook, walk…
Me gusta viajar, ver cine, leer, comer, cocinar, pasear…
What is your motto to live by?
We must learn to value what is close to us, appreciate it and not take it for granted.
