Today we also have a special treat, an excellent trilingual interview with a Berlin artist couple, Greif Lazic.
Could we start with some background information about you? Where you grow up, where you based, how did you get interested in art?
Aleks: I was born in the city of Freudenstadt near the Black Forest. I spent the first half of my youth in Serbia with my grandparents. The other was in Germany with my parents, who left the Balkans in the 70ies. We moved a lot around, and I kept the tradition. I was always obsessed with capturing and preserving moments in photographs, film, and graphics. So I became a media designer. Since 2002 I have lived in Berlin, where I worked in different creative fields, mainly in graphic design, 2D animation, and film, and where I met this beautiful creature and fell in love. Michele resurrected my almost-forgotten passion for creating and capturing moments. And the rest is history.
Michele: I was born in the south of Italy but grew up in Torino. I have been into drawing and art since day one, leading me to art school and then 3 years of architecture. After that, I graduated with a bachelor of science in design. I had the chance to do an 8 months internship with Studio Formafantasma in Eindhoven (NL), and the year after, I moved to berlin.
Aleks: Ich bin im Schwarzwald geboren in Freudenstadt. Die erste Hälfte meiner Kindheit verbrachte ich in Serbien bei meinen Großeltern. Der andere in Deutschland bei meinen Eltern, die in den 70er Jahren den Balkan verließen, um das deutsche Wirtschaftswunder anzukurbeln. Wir sind viel umgezogen, und ich habe die Tradition beibehalten. Ich war schon immer davon besessen, Momente in Fotografien, Filmen und Grafiken festzuhalten. So wurde ich Mediengestalter. Seit 2002 lebe ich in Berlin, wo ich in verschiedenen kreativen Bereichen gearbeitet habe, hauptsächlich in Grafikdesign, 2D-Animation und Film, und wo ich dieses wunderschöne Geschöpf traf und mich verliebte. Michele hat meine fast erloschene Leidenschaft für das Schaffen und Festhalten von Momenten wiederbelebt. Und der Rest ist Geschichte.
Michele: Ich bin in Süditalien geboren, aber in Turin aufgewachsen. Ich beschäftige mich seit dem ersten Tag mit Zeichnen und Kunst, was mich zur Kunstschule und dann zu 3 Jahren Architektur geführt hat. Danach schloss ich mein Studium mit einem Bachelor of Science in Design ab. Ich hatte die Möglichkeit, ein 8-monatiges Praktikum bei Studio Formafantasma in Eindhoven (NL) zu absolvieren und zog im Jahr darauf nach Berlin.
Aleks: Sono nato a Freudenstadt vicino alla Foresta Nera. Ho passato metá della mia infanzia in Serbia con i miei nonni e l’altra metá in Germania con i miei genitori che hanno lasciato i Balcani negli anni ́70. Ci siamo spostati molto durante quegli anni e ho sempre portato con me la tradizione, ossessionato nel catturare questi momenti con la fotografia, film e grafica. Sono così diventato un disegnatore pubblicitario. Vivo a Berlino dal 2002 dove ho svolto diversi lavori nell’ambito creativo tra cui graphic design, animazione 2D, film etc.. e dove ho incontrato questa bellissima creatura e mi sono innamorato
Michele ha resuscitato in me la quasi dimenticata passione di creare e catturare i bei momenti. Il resto è storia.
Michele: Sono nato al sud Italia ma sono cresciuto a Torino. La mia passione per l´arte e il disegno é iniziata dal mio primo giorno di vita e mi ha portato al liceo artistico, a studiare architettura per tre anni fino al conseguimento del bachelor in disegno industriale. Finiti gli studi ho avuto l´opportunitá di fare un internship presso lo studio Formafantasma in Olanda e l´anno successivo mi sono trasferito a Berlino.
How did you meet and how/why did you start working together?
We got introduced to each other by a mutual friend in front of the Berghain toilets. Shortly after, we moved in together. Two years into the relationship, we realized that we are at our best when working creatively together. We started painting together, parallel on one canvas, and that’s how our first series, “What If?” was created.
Wir wurden einander vor der Berghain-Toilette, von einem gemeinsamen Freund, vorgestellt. Kurz darauf zogen wir zusammen. Zwei Jahre nach Beginn der Beziehung haben wir erkannt, dass wir am besten funktionieren, wenn wir kreativ zusammenarbeiten. Wir begannen gemeinsam zu malen, parallel auf einer Leinwand, und so entstand unsere erste Serie “What If?”.
Un nostro comune amico ci ha introdotti davanti al bagno del Berghain. Poco dopo siamo andati a vivere insieme e due anni dentro la relazione abbiamo iniziato anche a dipingere insieme sulla stessa tela ed è cosí che è nata la nostra prima serie di dipinti, “What If?”
How to imagine the creative process of your duo? What is the part you do together and what is 1/1 work?
Some ideas are spontaneous, and others we write down and collect in a book. We also have a few ongoing series that we revisit from time to time. The art’s physical creation is also approached differently depending on the series or artwork. Sometimes we work on the exact painting parallel, sometimes on two artworks from the same series simultaneously or parallel two different series. Regarding other tasks like photos, online store, social media, shipping, and, since we live in Germany, a shit load of paperwork, we share equally. But since it’s just the two of us, we are thrilled about every minute we can spend together creating art.
Manche Ideen sind spontan, andere schreiben wir auf und sammeln sie in einem Buch. Einige fortlaufende Serien, die wir von Zeit zu Zeit erneut besuchen, haben wir auch. Die physische Entstehung der Kunst wird je nach Serie oder Kunstwerk auch unterschiedlich angegangen. Mal arbeiten wir parallel an exakt einem Bild, mal an zwei Kunstwerken aus derselben Serie parallel oder zur selben Zeit an zwei verschiedenen Serien. Andere Aufgaben wie Fotos, Online-Shop, Social Media, Versand und einen Haufen Papierkram, teilen wir uns zu gleichen Teilen auf. Da wir aber nur zu zweit sind, freuen wir uns mehr über jede Minute, die wir gemeinsam Kunst schaffen können.
Alcune idee ci vengono spontaneamente mentre altre idee vengono collezionate in quaderni. Per quanto riguarda la parte pratica, qualche volta dipingiamo sulla stessa tela allo stesso momento, a volte lavoriamo separatamente sulla stessa serie di lavori e a volte su due serie completamente diverse. Per quanto riguarda il resto che c’è da fare, come fare le foto, preparare i lavori da spedire, social media e tutta la burocrazia Tedesca, ci dividiamo il lavoro. La parte più eccitante del processo è quando siamo insieme e facciamo arte.
Berlin is considered one of the gay strongholds of Europe. How does the city’s buzz or the gay life there affect you?
Berlin was and still is known for its excessive, brutal, and never-ending nights. Not just on the weekend. Countless choices and possibilities with little or no taboos and restrictions. And we love to dive in deep from time to time. Berlin is a constant source of inspiration, and we love the city. But not just for the nightlife. The list of museums, exhibitions, and other cultural events is endless.
Different aspects of the city are strongly reflected in many of our artworks. The post pandemic club culture in “Neverlands,” for example. In Dialogue, we observe the streets and architecture of Berlin in connection to our experiences around these places like in “Urbanstraße”. In “Flowers in the Dark,” we recall glimpses of encounters, sessions, and brief romanticized dates, with flowers embodying the joy and beauty of the moment surrounded by the dark unknown and danger.
Berlin war und ist bekannt für seine exzessiven, brutalen und endlosen Nächte. Nicht nur am Wochenende. Unzählige Optionen und Möglichkeiten mit wenig oder keinen Tabus und Einschränkungen. Wir lieben es von Zeit zu Zeit, in den Berlin-Sud der uns umgibt, einzutauchen. Die Stadt ist eine ständige Inspirationsquelle. Aber nicht nur das Nachtleben. Die Liste der Museen, Ausstellungen und anderen kulturellen Veranstaltungen ist endlos. Der Einfluss der Stadt lässt sich in unseren Arbeiten gut erkennen. Verschiedene Aspekte der Stadt spiegeln sich stark in vielen unserer Kunstwerke wider. Die Clubkultur, nach der Pandemie, in „Neverlands“ zum Beispiel. Im Dialog betrachten wir die Straßen und die Architektur Berlins in Verbindung mit unseren Erfahrungen rund um diese Orte, wie in “Urbanstraße”. In „Flowers in the Dark“ erinnern wir uns an flüchtige Eindrücke von Begegnungen, Sessions und kurzen romantischen Verabredungen, wobei Blumen die Freude und Schönheit des Moments verkörpern, umgeben von dem dunklen Unbekannten und der Gefahr.
Berlino era, ed è ancora famosa, per le sue eccessive, brutali ed infinite notti e non solo nel fine settimana. Ci sono infinite scelte e quasi nessun tabù e ogni tanto ci piace nuotarci dentro. Berlino é una costante fonte d’ispirazione per noi e non ci riferiamo solo alla vita notturna. La lista di musei, mostre ed eventi culturali non finisce mai. Diversi aspetti della città sono visibili nei nostri lavori come ad esempio nella serie “Neverlands” con i suoi club post pandemia. In “Dialogues” osserviamo la fisicità delle strade e degli edifici che racchiudono le nostre esperienze come in “Urbanstrasse” . Nella serie “Flowers in the Dark” esploriamo in modo oscuro e romantico l´idea di quegl´incontri di sesso occasionale dove i fiori simboleggiano la gioia e l´eccitamento della situazione e il nero il suo pericolo.
What inspires you?
We get inspired by nature, people’s behavior, gender identity, and sexuality. Being queer and navigating through society is an endless source of inspiration.
Wir lassen uns von der Natur, dem Verhalten der Menschen, der Geschlechtsidentität und der Sexualität inspirieren. Queer zu sein und durch die Gesellschaft zu navigieren, ist eine unendliche Quelle der Inspiration.

Where would you most like to see your work?
Aleks: I always picture us on an art tour, in an Airstream Camper, across all the European capitals. We arrive in a city and set up the exhibition, which is basically in and around the camper. Having drinks, talking about art, and getting to know the people of Europe even better. Besides my Nomad Dream, I would love to see our art in Berghain.
Michele: I would love to see our art In all the LGBTQ+ galleries and museums worldwide.
Aleks: Ich stelle uns immer auf einer Kunsttour vor, in einem Airstream Camper, quer durch alle europäischen Hauptstädte. Wir kommen in einer Stadt an und bauen die Ausstellung auf, die sich im Grunde im und um den Camper herum befindet. Drinks servieren, über Kunst reden und die Menschen Europas noch besser kennenlernen. Abgesehen von meinem Nomaden-Traum, würde ich gerne unsere Kunst im Berghain sehen.
Michele: Ich würde gerne unsere Kunst in allen LGBTQ+ Galerien und Museen weltweit sehen.
Aleks: Ho sempre immaginato di fare un tour artistico in tutte le città Europee guidando un Airstream Camper. Mi immagino di arrivare nella città prescelta, allestire la mostra attorno al camper e invitare la gente del posto a parlare d’arte e bere un drink. A parte questo sogno nomade mi piacerebbe vedere i nostri lavori al Berghain.
Michele: Mi piacerebbe vedere i nostri lavori esposti in tutti i musei LGBTQ+ del mondo.
How much impact do you think painting has in today’s digital world?
Many art lovers prefer a physical piece of art on the wall. You can hang a monitor on your wall with a beautiful NFT running all day. Still, that device doesn’t have the smell of varnish and paper. You don’t see the marks, technique, or imperfection of the physical piece of art. The physicality of the artwork, made by the hand of the artist, is something digital art can only partially replace. Nevertheless, digital and physical art can coexist.
Viele Kunstliebhaber bevorzugen ein physisches Kunstwerk an der Wand. Sie können sich zwar einen Monitor aufhängen, auf dem den ganzen Tag ein wunderschönes NFT läuft, doch leider riecht das Gerät nicht nach Papier, Farbe oder Lack. Sie sehen nicht die Spuren des Pinsels, die Technik oder die Unvollkommenheit des physischen Kunstwerks. Das Haptische des Kunstwerks, geschaffen von der Hand des Künstlers, kann digitale Kunst nur teilweise ersetzen. Dennoch sind wir überzeugt, dass digitale und physische Kunst koexistieren können.
Secondo noi molti collezionisti d’arte preferiscono ancora avere un’opera fisica appesa al muro. Oggi si può appendere anche un monitor al muro con un bellissimo NFT che scorre tutto il giorno ma quello schermo non ha lo stesso odore di carta e fissativo, non ha la fisicità dei segni e le imperfezioni lasciate dall’artista. In ogni caso crediamo nella possibile coesistenza.
In art what do you think it takes to succeed recently?
To our surprise, the most personal stories and experiences translated into art were the ones that spoke to people. Guess you just need to find your tribe, the people your art speaks to. Being present and authentic is the kind of Success we believe in and aspire to. And, of course, you gotta sell some art.
Zu unserer Überraschung waren die persönlichsten Geschichten und Erfahrungen, die wir in Kunst übersetzt haben, diejenigen, die die Menschen am stärksten angesprochen haben. Wir schätzen, Künstler müssen nur Ihren Stamm der Gleichgesinnten finden, Menschen, die sich von ihrer Kunst angesprochen fühlen. Präsent und authentisch zu sein ist die Art von Erfolg, an die wir glauben und nach der wir streben. Und verkauft werden muss sie noch, die Kunst.
Sorprendentemente i lavori più personali sono quelli che parlano di più alla gente. Devi trovare la tua tribù e le persone a cui la tua arte arriva. Essere autentici e presenti è il tipo di successo in cui crediamo. Ovviamente bisogna anche riuscire a vendere i propri lavori.
What do you do when you got time for yoursel?
We are happy to have quite a few similar interests regarding our spare time. We both are documentaries-movie-lovers, news junkies, and dog owners. So lots of excellent movies, recently awful news, and long walks. We also visit exhibitions, museums, and theaters as often as possible and cook healthy vegan food whenever possible.
Wir sind froh über ähnliche Interessen der Gestaltung unserer Freizeit. Wir sind beide Dokumentarfilm-Liebhaber, Nachrichten-Junkies und Hundebesitzer. Also viele exzellente Filme, derzeit schreckliche Nachrichten und lange Spaziergänge. Außerdem besuchen wir so oft wie möglich Ausstellungen, Museen und Theater und kochen wann immer möglich gesundes veganes Essen.
Fortunatamente abbiamo molti interessi in comune, Ci piace guardare documentari, film, divoriamo le news e abbiamo due cani quindi tante lunghe passeggiate. Ci piace molto andare per musei, teatri e cucinare cibo vegano.
What do you see yourself doing 10 years from now?
We dream of building a tiny house with a studio where we paint, a queer art gallery, and a little restaurant within a glasshouse. We would grow our food and cook meals three days a week. So hopefully, guiding a group of art lovers through the queer art exhibition, chatting with artists, and serving tasty organic vegan food.
Wir träumen davon, ein Tiny-Haus mit Atelier, queerer Kunstgalerie und ein kleines Restaurant innerhalb eines Gewächshauses zu bauen. Eigenes Gemüse und Obst an drei Tagen der Woche für Gäste zuzubereiten. Also, in 10 Jahren sehen wir uns, eine Gruppe von Kunstliebhabern durch die queere Kunstausstellung führen, mit Künstlern plaudern und leckeres veganes Bio-Essen servieren.
Il nostro sogno è quello di costruire una Tiny House con uno studio per dipingere, aprire una piccola galleria queer, coltivare il nostro cibo e aprire un piccolo ristorante vegano dentro una serra in modo da ospitare amanti dell’arte e del cibo vegano km zero.
